‘Expected to conclude the trade agreement between India-European Association, French minister said after meeting Piyush Goyal

France Tuesday & Nbsp; (June 3, 2025) hoped that the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union will be completed in the coming weeks or months.

French Foreign Trade Minister Laurent St.-Martin said that it is important to show the world that both sides believe in free trade, not in trade war.

He also said that defense sector is one of the stories of success in India-France bilateral relations. The minister said, ‘So come, make this defense sector an example for other areas.

Martin told reporters here after meeting with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, ‘I hope we can make a compromise in the coming weeks, months, because we have to show the world that we believe in free trade in business, not in business war.

The European Union is a group of 27 countries including France and Germany. Goyal is on an official visit here. A business delegation with more than 50 members led by him has come here.

He said that the meeting of the heads of both sides is important amidst global uncertainties on the trade front.

Goyal said, ‘This meeting matters a lot to us, because we are living in a very difficult time in terms of global business. Both India and France believe that we have to strengthen our relations. Both India and France have to strengthen economic and cultural relations. Martin said, “India is one of our priorities and I know that the European Commission really wants to intensify the conversation for the agreement.”

He said that France wants to reduce fees and non-fees obstacles. Martin said, ‘On the other hand, we have to take care of our agricultural sector as well and take care of some of our norms in the context of environment. Also, cleanliness norms have to be taken care of and in the end an agreement should be agreed. Both sides have to understand each other’s concerns and needs. He said that trade relations between Europe and India have not reached their potential and both sides need to promote export and investment.
