India-Iran Relations: Another country in West Asia is currently going through serious turmoil. American sanctions and continuous protests have pushed the entire country, including Iran’s capital Tehran, towards instability. The situation developing in Iran is not just a regional crisis, but it is sure to have a direct impact on India’s diplomatic, economic and strategic interests.
At a time when India’s neighbor Bangladesh is already grappling with political instability, the deepening of the crisis in Iran could shake a strong pillar of New Delhi’s foreign policy.
Direct impact of Iran crisis on India
The reality is that relations between India and Iran have never been of ideal friendship. These relations have been based more on strategic needs than on emotions. Whenever Pakistan prevented India from reaching Afghanistan and Central Asia through its land, Iran emerged as the only viable option for India.
With time, Tehran became a strategic partner of India, which neutralized Pakistan’s geographical barriers and kept India connected to West Asia and Central Asia.
But now this option is in danger
Today the situation is changing rapidly.
political instability in bangladesh
Continued strained relations with Pakistan
China’s increasing influence from South Asia to West Asia
Global uncertainty created by US tariff policy under the leadership of Donald Trump
Amidst all this, if instability in Iran deepens, then it can become a new and complex geopolitical challenge for India.
Why is Iran so important for India?
The importance of Iran for India lies in its geography. For decades, this country has been a gateway for India to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia, that too bypassing Pakistan. Due to this strategic need, India invested in the Chabahar Port project, so that it can create an alternative trade and connectivity corridor while avoiding any kind of geographical rivalry.
Chabahar: not just a port, but a strategic weapon
Talking to TVI, JNU Professor Ranjan Kumar says that whenever Pakistan stopped the movement of India, Iran played an important role in maintaining India’s access to Central Asia. According to him, Chabahar is not just a port but a strategic lifeline for India.
Although the project has faced challenges such as US sanctions, funding delays and political instability in Afghanistan, it remains an important part of India’s long-term strategy.
Change of power can create problems for India
Experts believe that if there is any kind of regime change or prolonged instability in Iran, it will have a direct impact on long-term projects like Chabahar. This will not only affect India’s access to West and Central Asia, but may also weaken the strategic balance policy of its foreign policy.
