Eyelid Itching Reason: Recently, a very unique and shocking case came to light in Amreli district of Gujarat, which surprised even the doctors. A 66-year-old woman named Geetaben, resident of Surat, was suffering from severe itching and pain in her eyelids for the last two and a half months. His eyes remained red and he had spent sleepless nights. Finally, when he consulted Dr. Mrigank Patel in the eye department of a hospital in Savarkundla, the investigation revealed that about 250 live lice were living in his eyelids. Dr. Patel explains that these lice are very sensitive to light and special attention has to be paid to remove them. Considering the medical circumstances, the operation had to be done without injection. This entire process lasted for about two hours. In medical term this condition is called phthriasis palpebrarum.

According to the BBC report, Dr. Patel said, when Geetaben came to the OPD for the first time, she told that she was having itching in her eyelids for months. Usually this happens due to dandruff or allergies, but when we looked carefully, lice and their round eggs were clearly visible on the eyelids. This was a very rare situation.” He told that these parasites survive on human blood. Since the skin of the eyelids is very thin, they easily suck blood and stick to the eyelids, causing severe itching. Even if the patient wants, he cannot remove them easily. Since the situation was unusual, the doctors first explained it to Geetaben peacefully so that she does not get scared or nervous.

Geetaben’s son Amit Mehta told BBC Gujarati, “Mother’s eyes were burning and itching for months. Even after visiting several hospitals, there was no help. When she brought Savarkundla, Dr. Mrigank told that there were lice in the eyes and they would have to be removed immediately.” Dr. Patel and his team removed the lice one by one under a microscope with the help of a special instrument called Macpherson Forceps. Local anesthesia was given before the procedure so that pain was felt less. In this difficult operation that lasted for about two hours, the doctors removed more than 250 lice and 85 eggs from both the eyelids. After this the patient felt immediate relief, itching ended and the eyes gradually started becoming normal. The next day, when Geetaben reached the hospital for re-examination, her eyes were completely clear and healthy.
