PM Kusum Yojana: The real essence of farming in India lies in water and soil. But without electricity everything remains incomplete. What is PM-Kusum Scheme?
This scheme launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) promotes the use of solar power in agriculture. Its biggest objective is to get the farmers out of the clutches of diesel pumps and uncertain grid electricity. Under this scheme, farmers can get free electricity not only for irrigation by installing solar panels in their fields. In fact, you can also earn extra income by selling excess electricity to the grid.
- Seeing the success of this scheme started in the year 2019, the government has extended its deadline till March 2026.
- The scheme works on three major goals: reliable electricity for irrigation, increasing farmers’ earnings by selling solar energy and keeping the environment pollution-free.
To put it in simple words. Now your farm will produce not only grains but also electricity which will directly increase your bank balance.

Who can take advantage of this?
The scope of PM-Kusum scheme is quite large. So that small to big farmers and groups can take advantage of it. The rules vary slightly by state, but these are the main people who are eligible:
- Individual farmers can install solar plants or pumps on their land.
- Farmer groups, cooperative societies and panchayats can also take advantage of this on a large scale.
- Organizations like Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) and Water User Association (WUA) can also join this scheme and get solar feeders installed.
- The scheme is implemented through State Nodal Agencies (SNAs), through which farmers get complete guidance and support at the local level.
The special thing is that the farmers who have barren land. They can also earn fixed income every month by giving it on lease for setting up a solar power plant.
How to apply?
If you also want to join this scheme. So its process is quite simple and digital. You just have to choose the right official portal so that you do not become a victim of any fraud.
- First of all, register by visiting the official PM-Kusum portal or national portal of your state.
- You have to choose the right component as per your need.
- Like installing a new solar pump or converting an old electric pump into solar.
- During the application, important documents like land papers, pump details and Aadhaar have to be submitted online.
Once the site is verified and approved, huge subsidy is given by the government. Due to which the farmer has to spend very less part from his own pocket. The remaining money can also be managed through bank loan. Which can be gradually repaid from the income earned by selling solar electricity.
