Why Fatty Liver Is Found During Routine Checkup: Many people go for regular health checkups feeling absolutely normal and the problem of fatty liver is silently mentioned in the ultrasound report. No severe pain, no serious symptoms. This is the biggest reason for this problem that its symptoms are not visible. In medical term it is called Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease. When more than 5 percent of the total weight of the liver becomes fat, it is considered fatty liver. The beginning is mild, but as it progresses it can reach cirrhosis.
Why is it often discovered by chance?
Liver is a very tolerant organ. In the initial stage, it continues to do its normal work, detox, making protein, helping in digestion, everything keeps going on. Complaints like fatigue or slight heaviness in the right upper abdomen are often ignored. Dr. Anjali Saurabh, specialist at Auro Super Specialty Hospital, Patna, says that fatty liver is often revealed in routine ultrasound or scans done for some other reason. Even liver function tests may be normal in the initial stages, because the liver has a high capacity for regeneration.
What is happening inside the body?
Excess calories, especially refined carbs and sweet drinks, start getting stored as fat in the liver. Over time this can lead to inflammation, fibrosis, and in severe cases, cirrhosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this condition is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome. That means it is not just a sign of liver disease, but of the entire metabolism.
Its cases are increasing rapidly in India
Urban lifestyle, sitting for long hours, processed food, less sleep and stress are the main reasons for this. It is estimated that almost every third adult in urban India may be affected by fatty liver. The World Health Organization has also warned about the increasing burden of lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases.
Is alcohol responsible for this?
The simple answer to this is no. There are a large number of patients who do not drink alcohol, yet are affected by it. This misunderstanding often prevents people from taking timely action. The good news is that fatty liver can be reversed in the early stages. Losing weight by 5 to 10 percent can reduce liver fat. Exercising at least 150 minutes a week, reducing sugary drinks, keeping diabetes and cholesterol under control, all these are effective steps.
