Bangladesh General Elections 2025: Uncertainty about general election in Bangladesh is getting deeper. Majal Murshid, president of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, has expressed apprehension that the elections may be postponed once again, as the Election Commission has not announced any official schedule so far.
Murshid said in his statement that since August 5, 2024, there has been an atmosphere in the country. The government has so far not taken any concrete steps to ensure the election involving independent, fair and all classes as per the demand of the public. He alleged that in the meantime, Dr. Muhammad Yunus was made the head of the interim government in an unconstitutional manner, whereas there is no provision of any such interim government in the Constitution.
Commission is silent about elections
Murshid also told that the Chief Advisor went to London and met BNP acting president Tariq Rahman, after which it was said that elections will be held in February 2025. But since then the situation is not clear and the Election Commission is still silent.
Chief Election Commissioner said this big thing
All eyes are on the Election Commission, which has not yet issued any concrete date or schedule. Recently, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said in a statement, “It is not possible to hold elections without the cooperation of the government. Even though the Election Commission is called independent, the reality is that elections cannot be held without the central role of the government.” He also said that the election process cannot be completed without the help of agencies and administrative officials maintaining law and order.
While on the one hand the Election Commission is talking about ‘when time comes’ to decide the schedule, on the other hand, at the beginning of this month, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus had announced that the general elections will be held in early April 2025.
