Study of Earth’s upper atmosphere
The simple round design of the satellite played a scientific role. By seeing how long the satellite remained in orbit before falling back to Earth, scientists were able to estimate the density of the upper atmosphere. This data was very important for planning future satellite and space missions.
Experiment with radio waves
Radio signals were continuously sent to the Earth through this satellite. This allowed scientists to study how radio waves pass through the ionosphere. These signals could be picked up by radio operators around the world. Due to this, Sputnik’s presence in space truly became a global event.
Special things about Sputnik 1
The weight of this satellite was approximately 83.6 kg and it was a polished metal sphere of 50 cm diameter. This sphere had four long antennae. It ran at a speed of about 29000 kilometers per hour and kept sending signals for 22 days before its battery failed.
The success of this satellite shocked the whole world and started the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. This directly led to major investments in science education, rocket technology and ultimately human space flight.
