First Wine Of World: Whenever it comes to old wine, many people think of countries like Europe. But the truth is completely opposite. In fact, the world’s first wine was made in Georgia and its wine making tradition is more than 8000 years old. Let us know all the things related to this.
The first wine made in Georgia
In fact, evidence has been found that wine production in Georgia started around 6000 BC. This makes Georgia’s winemaking tradition older than the Egyptian pyramids and much older than classical European wine traditions. The special thing is that even today in Georgia, wine is made using thousands of years old technology.
Archaeological evidence found from the village
The strongest evidence comes from excavations at Gadachrili Gora and Shulaveris Gora, two settlements south of Tbilisi. Scientists have discovered fragments of large pottery vessels used to store liquids.
Chemical analysis of these pottery fragments revealed tartaric acid. This acid is the main chemical fingerprint of grapes and wine. This discovery is considered to be a sure proof that wine was made from fermented grapes in these vessels. Carbon dating site revealed the time of these remains between 6000 to 5800 BC.
Guinness World Record for oldest wine
Based on these discoveries, Georgia has also been officially listed in the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest wine producing country. In Georgia, wine is traditionally fermented and stored in large egg-shaped clay vessels called kvevri. After this they are buried under the ground. Georgia is home to more than 525 local grape varieties, one of the largest collections on earth. Georgia is also famous for amber wine. It is a white wine that is fermented with skins and seeds. This is why it gets its orange color. This style is generally considered to be the oldest form of wine ever made.
