When Eye Floaters Are Dangerous: Do you see small spots, lines or floating figures in front of your eyes? If yes, then it is not right to take it lightly. Usually, these subside after blinking and the brain also ignores them, but recently a study by Radboud University Medical Center has warned about these floaters. According to this research that came out in March 2026, if these spots start appearing continuously or increase suddenly, then it can be a sign of a serious eye problem.
Warning of what problem?
This research has been published in Annals of Family Medicine, in which data of about 42 thousand patients was analyzed. It was found that people who experienced repeated floaters, flashes of light or both symptoms, in some cases developed serious problems like retinal detachment. Retinal detachment is a condition in which the inner layer of the eye starts separating from its place. This is a very important part of the eye, which works to detect light. If it is not treated on time, it can lead to loss of vision.

In which people the risk increases?
The study also revealed that people who see flashes along with floaters have an increased risk. Although this danger does not exist in everyone, it is also not considered right to ignore it. According to Britain’s health service NHS, sometimes this problem is caused by “posterior vitreous detachment”, which is usually not harmful. In this, there is a change in the gel-like structure present inside the eye and small clumps of collagen are formed. However, if these spots become more visible suddenly, persist or are accompanied by problems like flashes of light, shadows or blurred vision, then it is important to immediately contact a doctor.
