The water level of Yamuna river in Delhi has increased considerably. The Yamuna reached the old railway bridge in the national capital on Wednesday (August 06) at 4 pm at the 204.13 meter mark, which is just 0.37 meters from the warning level of 204.50 meters. Officials have given information about this on Wednesday. A large amount of water has been released from the Hathinikund barrage, after which the water level of Yamuna has been recorded rapidly. In such a situation, the possibility of flooding in the low -lying areas of Delhi has increased.
According to officials, the water level of Yamuna increased due to heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of Haryana and Uttarakhand and excess water from Hathinikund barrage. We are constantly monitoring the situation. An official of the Central Flood Room said, “The reason for the increase in the water level is the high amount of water released from the Hathinikund barrage.
Water being released from Hathinikund barrage
For the first time in this monsoon on Wednesday, 50,000 cusecs of water was discharged from Hathinikund barrage in Haryana, which reached 61,000 cusecs around 6 am. According to officials, the release of water at around 4 pm was reduced to 40,000 cusecs.
Observatory point is an old iron bridge
The old iron bridge in the Yamuna river in Delhi serves as a very important observation point to monitor the flow of river and possible floods. The water released from Hathinikund barrage in Haryana usually takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi. The water level is increasing even after the release of less water from the upper stream, which is reaching close to the warning mark in Delhi. In view of the increase in the water level of Yamuna, the administration has warned the people living in low -lying areas.
