Healthy Foods That Harm The Heart: In today’s time, choosing healthy food is no less than achieving a big goal. Claims like natural, heart-friendly or wholesome written on packets gradually form our habits and assure us that we are eating right. But behind the shiny labels and big nutrition words, there are some foods that are generally considered healthy, but they can silently harm the heart.
In an Instagram post on November 22, Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist who specializes in heart failure and heart transplant, talked about 6 such “healthy” foods that can be risky for the heart for some people. Dr. Yaranov wrote in his caption, “The same things that people consider healthy can harm your heart. The point is not that these foods are bad, but that your heart, kidneys and medications determine how the body will handle salt, potassium and metabolism.”
banana
Banana is rich in potassium. But if your kidneys are not working properly or you are taking medicines like spironolactone or ARNI, potassium in the body can increase to dangerous levels, which can affect the heartbeat.
Grapefruit
Grapefruit interferes with the liver’s process of breaking down some medicines. In transplant patients or those taking certain medications, this can cause drug levels to exceed safe limits.
spinach
Spinach is also rich in potassium and this can affect the effect of blood thinner medicines like warfarin. Dr. Yaranov says, spinach is healthy, but what matters here is not “eating too much”, but regular and balanced quantity.
soy sauce
Soy sauce contains a lot of sodium. This can cause water retention in the body. Doctors warn that “after just one sushi night, the next day can start with shortness of breath and weight gain.”
licorice
True black licorice may increase blood pressure and decrease potassium. It is often hidden in tea, supplements or flavored products without people knowing.
Liquor
Alcohol directly acts like poison for the heart. Alcohol has also been a major reason for deteriorating heart health in many patients.
Dr. Yaranov explains that food is not just “good” or “bad”. It works together with your medicines, test reports and heart condition. That’s why it’s important to understand your body, know your numbers and stay one step ahead of your health.
