An era of politics of Jharkhand has ended. Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister of the state and one of the founding leaders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), died at the age of 81. He breathed his last at Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. He was struggling with a serious kidney disease for the past one month and was on a ventilator.
As soon as the news of his death came to light, a wave of mourning ran throughout Jharkhand. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is also his son, was present in Delhi himself and he informed about the father’s death on social media from the hospital itself. Being emotional on X (Twitter), he wrote, “Respected Dishom Guruji has left all of us. Today I am zero …”
Shibu Soren was popular by the name of ‘Guruji’
Shibu Soren was addressed in Jharkhand as ‘Guruji’. He had not just a politician, but had become a symbol of the fight for tribal identity and rights. He led the movement to give Jharkhand a separate state status. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha led by him created a new wave of political and social awareness in the tribal society.
Shibu Soren became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand thrice and was also a minister in the central government several times. His entire political life was devoted to the fight for the interests of the people of Jharkhand and especially the tribal community.
How educated was Shibu Soren?
Shibu Soren studied up to matriculation. He received education from Gola High School in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. At that time, the level of education in tribal society was very limited and there was also a lack of resources, despite this, he started work towards spreading awareness in the society.
Despite being limited qualification in the field of education, the way he made his strong identity in politics, it is inspiring in itself. He understood public sentiments, adopted language and culture and tried to join every section of the society.
An irreparable damage to Jharkhand
With the death of Shibu Soren, Jharkhand has lost a leader who put his entire life in laying the foundation for development. Whether there is a demand for tribal interests from the central government or to give voice to local movements within the state, he always kept the public firmly.
