Long-Lasting Hiccups Complications: Hiccups are a very common experience that almost everyone goes through. This happens due to the sudden and uncontrolled contraction of a muscle called diaphragm, due to which a sound like a hickey is produced. Usually hiccups stop on their own within a few minutes. In very rare cases, it may also be a sign of a problem. Hiccups occur when the process of inhaling air stops for a while. The reasons behind this could be filling of gas in the stomach, spicy food, or some hidden problems related to digestion and breathing. Most of the time hiccups are not harmful. People consider it normal and everyone has their own way of calming it down.
Why do hiccups occur?
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm suddenly contracts and during this the vocal cords close, producing that characteristic hicking sound. What usually triggers this are-
- eating or drinking too quickly
- drinking soda, very hot things, or alcohol
- stomach full of gas
- stress, anxiety or excitement
- eat much
- effects of certain medications, such as anesthesia or steroids
What problems can occur if hiccups occur again and again?
According to Cleveland Clinic, if hiccups persist for a long time, it can affect both everyday life and health. These problems can occur due to continuous hiccups-
- Weight loss or dehydration due to difficulty eating and drinking
- difficulty in talking
- Poor sleep, fatigue and decreased ability to concentrate
- Weakness due to difficulty in eating and drinking
- Mental stress, anxiety or depression
How to stop recurring hiccups?
- Drink cold water in small sips or gargle
- hold your breath and release slowly
- Apply gentle pressure – by holding the nose, on the diaphragm or on the tongue while swallowing
- Slightly sweet or sour – a pinch of sugar, lemon, a little vinegar
When should one worry?
Most hiccups stop on their own, but hiccups that last more than 48 hours are called chronic hiccups. In such a situation, it could be a sign of some hidden disease. Some serious conditions where hiccups can appear as a symptom-
- Brain and nerve problems: stroke, nerve damage
- Heart or lung disease: heart attack, pneumonia
- cancer: Side effects of tumor or cancer treatment
- Digestive problems: Inflammation of pancreas, irritation or infection in esophagus
When should one go to the doctor?
If hiccups last more than 48 hours, disturb sleep, make eating and drinking difficult, cause difficulty in breathing, or are accompanied by chest pain, high fever, vomiting, weakness or numbness, then it is important to consult a doctor immediately. Do not try to scare anyone suddenly to get rid of hiccups. This can sometimes stop hiccups, but there is also a risk of falling, injury or increasing heart problems.
