An important news related to the Delhi riots case of 2020 has come to light. The Supreme Court has rejected the bail plea of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, accused in this case. On the other hand, the court has granted bail to five accused including Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman with certain conditions.
This case of Delhi riots is counted among the most sensitive cases of the country. In the year 2020, many people lost their lives and a large number of people were injured in the violence in North-East Delhi. In this case, the police had accused many people of conspiring and inciting violence. On the basis of these allegations, some student leaders and social workers were arrested.
Now, while hearing the bail, the Supreme Court has made it clear that the allegations against some accused are serious and they cannot be given relief at this stage. Some other accused have been granted conditional bail, meaning they will have to follow certain rules.
What are the allegations against Umar Khalid?
Umar Khalid has been recognized as a student leader. He has been associated with Jawaharlal Nehru University i.e. JNU. Umar Khalid was a research scholar in JNU and was also associated with the Democratic Students Union. Earlier, his name had also come up in the JNU sedition case. In the Delhi riot case, the police allege that Umar Khalid gave inflammatory speeches before the violence and was a part of the conspiracy. Due to these allegations his bail petition has been rejected. The court believes that this matter still needs a thorough investigation and hearing.
Omar Khalid’s education
Umar Khalid is considered good in studies. Omar has achieved higher education in history. While staying in JNU, he became very active in student politics. Along with studies, his opinions on social and political issues were often discussed.
Sharjeel Imam’s journey
Sharjeel Imam’s name is also included among the main accused in this case. Sharjeel Imam started his educational journey from science. Earned B.Tech and M.Tech degrees in Computer Engineering from IIT Bombay. After this, he took interest in subjects like history and politics and started doing PhD in Modern History from JNU. Due to some speeches given before the Delhi riots, Sharjeel Imam was also accused of inciting violence. The court has also rejected his bail plea.
Gulfisha Fatima got relief
Gulfisha Fatima has got conditional bail in this case. Gulfisha has been an educated student and social worker. Who has done MBA from an institute in Ghaziabad and has studied MA in Urdu from Delhi University. Gulfisha also received training as a radio jockey and wanted to become a teacher in future. He played an active role in the movements against the citizenship law. In the year 2020, he was arrested in the Delhi riots case.
Meeran Haider and others
Meeran Haider has been a PhD student of Jamia Millia Islamia. Who was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in April 2020. Police alleged that he was involved in the conspiracy of riots. Now he has got conditional bail from the Supreme Court. Similarly, some other accused including Shifa ur Rehman have also been given relief, but they will have to strictly follow the bail conditions.
