
Chilka Lake of Orissa, known as the dolphin capital of India, is the most famous place in the country to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphin. This species of dolphin, which has a round head and is seen playing in the water, is most visible near Satpada and Rambha areas. The time from November to February is considered the best time to see dolphins here, when migratory birds also enhance the beauty of the lake.

While famous for beaches and holidays, Goa is also a favorite place for dolphin watching. Indo Pacific, humpback and bottlenose dolphins are often seen in the sea here. It can be easily seen especially around Singarium, Candolim, Calangute and Palolem beaches. October to May is considered the best time to see dolphins in Goa.

The clear and calm waters of Lakshadweep are considered the best place to see spinner and common dolphins. Seeing these dolphins jumping and roaming in the water is a different experience for any wildlife lover. The dry season from November to March in Lakshadweep is considered the best time to see dolphins.

Bottlenose, spinner and Indo Pacific humpback dolphins are also often seen in the clear waters of Andaman and Nicobar. Havelock Island and North Bay are especially famous for dolphin cruises. The best time to see dolphins here is considered to be from November to April.

Apart from these, the rare Gangetic freshwater dolphin is found in the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, spread from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon on the Ganga river in Bihar. This species is almost blind by nature and recognizes the path with the help of echo. It has also been considered the national aquatic animal of India. The time from October to March is considered best to see dolphins here.
