Full solution to every ongoing confusion on India-US trade deal explained.

After the trade deal with America, the opposition is angry at the ruling party and the ruling party is angry at the opposition. The opposition is saying that Indian farmers suffered losses, while the government is saying that India is only benefiting. Overall, there is so much confusion on this trade deal that it is not possible to decide whether this trade deal is really a benefit or a loss for the farmers of India. So let’s try to clear this confusion in today’s clear cut episode. And also let us try to understand whether this deal has really happened or it is just Trump’s post, in which only reduced tariffs are applicable now.

What is the essence of the trade deal between India and America is not yet clear, but there are some points on which US President Trump himself has clearly written on his social media site Truth Social. Those claims of Trump have not been rejected by the Indian Government yet, so it can be understood that

  • India will stop buying oil from Russia and will fulfill its oil needs from America and Venezuela.
  • India will buy goods worth $500 billion from America in the next five years, which will include aircraft, technology items, precious metals, oil, nuclear products and agricultural goods.

The issue of Russian oil and agriculture in this entire deal is the most confusing point of this deal because on behalf of the government, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said in the Lok Sabha that there will be no compromise with the interests of the farmers, whereas the opposition is clearly saying that this deal is not in the interest of the farmers and the implementation of this deal will destroy the farmers of India.

The statement made by US Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins regarding farmers seems to be proving the opposition’s apprehensions correct, because Brook Rollins has said that this trade deal is expected to promote the export of American agricultural products in the Indian market. Brook Rollins wrote on the social media platform X, ‘America’s agricultural trade deficit with India in 2024 was $ 1.3 billion. India’s growing population is an important market for American agricultural products and today’s agreement will go a long way in reducing this deficit.

This statement of the US Agriculture Secretary has neither been rejected by the government nor has any clarification been given on it. All that is being said is that there will be no loss to the farmers, but the real thing is that this deal has not been done yet. Right now the talks are going on and things are in a positive direction, America has reduced the tariff imposed on India, which was earlier 25 percent and with the penalty of 25 percent it used to go up to 50 percent, which is now only 18 percent and this is the only thing which is applicable with immediate effect. Rest of this deal is not yet implemented and Piyush Goyal has given clarification on this on behalf of the government.

This is also true because if the deal is signed, it is signed by both the parties. There are some documents which are made public. There are some conditions which the officials of both the countries have to disclose to the media of their respective countries, but no such document has been made public yet. To finalize this document, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has also gone to America, where he met Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio. After meeting Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, Dr. Jaishankar posted on X and wrote that-

‘A wide-ranging conversation took place which covered the agenda of our bilateral cooperation, regional and global issues. The aspects of India-US strategic partnership that were discussed included trade, energy, nuclear, defence, critical minerals and technology. It has been agreed to hold early meetings of various mechanisms to advance our common interests.

The rest are apprehensions and serious apprehensions, with which the interests of the farmers are directly linked. Until the details of this deal are revealed, it would not be appropriate to do a detailed analysis of this deal based only on apprehensions or only on Trump’s post. So we wait for the deal to be done, wait for its detailed details to come and till then we keep forming our understanding by listening to the arguments of the ruling party and the opposition.
