Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is going to organize the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering i.e. GATE 2026 examination. This examination will start from 7th February and will also be conducted on 8th, 14th and 15th February 2026 at different examination centers across the country. The examination will be conducted in different shifts according to different subjects, so that all the candidates can get the right arrangement.
GATE exam is considered very important for engineering and science students because it opens the way for higher education in IITs, NITs and other big institutes. Besides, many government and private companies also recruit on the basis of GATE score.
Exam will be computer based, 30 papers will be included
This time the GATE 2026 exam will be conducted in computer based test i.e. CBT mode. The examination will include papers from a total of 30 subjects. The special thing is that a new sectional paper named “Energy Science” has been added under Engineering Sciences (XE). This is expected to benefit the students studying in energy related fields. The examination has been designed in such a way that the students’ understanding, calculation ability and grasp of the subject can be thoroughly tested.
The duration of each paper will be three hours
The duration of each paper of GATE 2026 has been fixed at three hours. Candidates have been advised to reach the examination center before the scheduled time. Candidates will be allowed to enter the center 40 minutes before the commencement of the examination.
Apart from this, candidates will be able to login to their computer system 20 minutes before the start of the examination. During this, they will be able to read the important instructions given on the screen carefully, so that they do not face any problem during the examination.
Those arriving late will not be allowed entry
The rules related to the examination have been kept very strict. No candidate will be allowed to enter the center after 30 minutes of the commencement of the examination. Also, no one will be allowed to go out before the exam is over.
You will get a chance to give one or two papers
In GATE 2026, candidates can appear for one or two papers as per their ability and need. This will give students a chance to choose a better option according to their career.
Three types of questions will be asked
MCQ: Four options will be given in these questions, out of which only one will be correct. Negative marking will be applicable for wrong answers, i.e. marks will be deducted.
MSQ: More than one option may be correct in these questions. There will be no negative marking, but if all the correct options are not selected then even partial marks will not be given.
NAT: Candidates will not get any option in these questions. They will have to type the answer themselves from the keypad given on the screen. There will be no negative marking in these also.
