Every child has the right to education whether it is a boy or a girl. But even today, this equal is limited to papers in India. Especially when it comes to private schools, this inequality becomes even more clear. A report recently revealed that the number of boys in private schools of the country is more today and this distance has been continuously maintained instead of being reduced in the last ten years.
The popularity of private schools in India has increased rapidly in the last decade. Parents’ confidence in government schools has decreased and they are getting their children admitted to private schools in the hope of better facilities and English medium. But most of the boys have benefited from this change.
According to the data, 61 percent of the total children studying in private schools in 2023-24 are boys, while the girls’ share is only 39 percent. That is, there are only 4 girls out of every 10 students. Conversely, the share of girls in government schools is around 49 percent, which shows a slightly better situation.
These states are doing better performance
According to reports, this inequality is not limited to only one or two states. Especially in the states of North India and Western India, this gap is deeper. The enrollment of girls in private schools in states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab is also below the average of the country (48.1%). At the same time, some states of Northeast India like Meghalaya and Mizoram are doing better in this matter, where the share of girls is relatively high.
What are the reasons?
Now the question arises that why is this happening? There are many reasons for this. The first is family thinking. Even today, many families consider boys only to invest in studies. The second reason is the expensive fees of private schools, due to which many times families can afford the same child’s education and in that case they give priority to the boy. The third major concern is the safety of girls and the distance of the school, due to which many parents do not send them to distant private schools.
