Genghis Khan Religion: Whenever people hear the name of Genghis Khan, they often associate his empire with the areas where Islam later became dominant. A question always arises among people whether Genghis Khan was a Muslim. The answer is no. Despite ruling over a large Muslim population, Genghis Khan followed an old Mongolian belief system. Let us know what was the religion of Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan’s religion
Genghis Khan was a follower of Tengriism. It was an ancient socialist religion practiced by Mongolian and Turkic tribes. Genghis Khan worshiped Tengiri (blue sky). He believed that his rise to power was due to Tengiri, making him an elected ruler rather than a traditional king.
Tengriism emphasized harmony with nature. The mountains, rivers, air and sky were sacred and Genghis Khan often prayed before battles at sacred sites such as Mount Burhan Khaldun.
All religions were respected
Although Genghis Khan personally believed in Shamanism, his empire also included followers of Islam, Buddhism, Christianity and Taoism. There everyone was allowed to practice their religion freely. Instead of imposing a state religion, he believed that unity could be achieved only by respecting different beliefs.
Under the rule of Genghis Khan, religious leaders were exempted from taxes and forced labor. These included monks, priests, imams and shamans. Scholars from different religions regularly engaged in religious debates in the Mongol capital, Karakoram.
Yasa law and religious boundaries
Genghis Khan had imposed a strict law called Yasa on his empire. Although Yasa guaranteed religious freedom, Mongol customs were also imposed over religious practices. Killing and circumcising animals in halal manner was banned.
Religious changes after Genghis Khan
Although Genghis Khan remained a shamanist throughout his life, his descendants gradually adopted other religions. His grandson Kublai Khan was inclined towards Tibetan Buddhism. The Mongol rulers in Central Asia and Persia later adopted Islam, and the rulers of the Golden Horde in the Russian region also adopted Islam over time.
