Controversy arose over a comment made by Tina Dabi during the ongoing agitation by girl students against the fee hike in Barmer Women’s College. Amidst the sloganeering, two student leaders belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) called the District Collector a ‘reel star’. After this the police took both of them into custody, due to which the matter became more heated.
The students were sitting on a dharna outside the women’s college demanding withdrawal of the fee hike. Meanwhile, two student leaders of ABVP also reached there in support. Amidst the sloganeering, the comment ‘Reel Star’ came to the fore. After some time, Kotwali police reached the spot and took both the student leaders into custody. As soon as the news of the detention of the student leaders spread, the students sitting on strike also reached the Kotwali police station and started raising slogans outside the police station.
Action due to statement – girl students
The girl students participating in the protest allege that the student leaders were detained not for protesting against the fee hike, but for calling the collector a reel star. The students say that this was not a derogatory comment.
Student Heena Khatri, who participated in the protest, said that if someone is saying that Madam is a reel star then what is wrong in it? Be it cleanliness campaign or any other program, their videos are made everywhere. There was no insult in this.
The police and district administration said that this action was taken to maintain law and order. According to the police, the situation at the spot was becoming tense, so as a precautionary measure both the student leaders were detained. Later he was released without any case being registered.
Tina Dabi is not our role model
The students were demanding to call District Collector Tina Dabi and intervene in this matter. It is alleged that the ADM and SDM who reached there refused to call Collector Tina Dabi. He said that he is like a role model for you all.
The girl students sitting on strike were upset at this answer. He said that Madam Tina Dabi is not a role model but a reel star. She is seen making reels in public programs, but she has no time for the issue of fees of the girl students who are sitting on strike. In such a situation, she will consider him only a reel star and not a role model. His role models are Ahilyabai Holkar and Rani Lakshmi Bai.
Protest continues over fee hike
Despite this entire incident, the protest of girl students against the fee hike in women’s college is still going on. The students say that their agitation will continue until the increased fees are withdrawn. On the other hand, Barmer district administration says that efforts are being made to find a solution through talks between the college management and the girl students.
