Indian Railways, known as the lifeline of the country, has gone through a major transformation in the last ten years. While giving information in Rajya Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that now Railways is not only able to meet its expenses but is also left with revenue surplus at the end of the year. This change, along with the economic strength of the Railways, has also brought new employment opportunities for lakhs of youth.

The Railway Minister said that the operating ratio of Railways in the financial year 2024-25 was 98.22 percent. This means that Railways is now able to control its expenses better. During this period, the gross traffic income of Railways was more than Rs 2 lakh 65 thousand crore and a surplus of about Rs 2,660 crore was recorded. This situation is quite different from a decade ago, when the Railways faced difficulties even in meeting its expenses.
More than 5 lakh jobs in last 10 years

The Railway Minister told the House that between 2014 and 2024, about 5.04 lakh youth were given jobs in the Railways. These include many posts like Track Maintenance, Loco Pilot, Technician, Clerk, Engineer and Group-D. This number shows that Railways remains one of the largest employing departments in the country.

Preparation for 1.5 lakh new recruitments in the third term

The process of providing 1.5 lakh more jobs in Railways is going on in the third term of Modi government. According to the minister, the examination and selection process of many recruitments has been completed, while notifications on many posts are expected soon. This is considered a big opportunity for the youth, especially for those candidates who are preparing for government jobs.

Path to jobs created through expenditure control

Railways has also paid special attention to reducing costs. About Rs 5,500 crore has been saved in energy costs. Expenditure on diesel and electricity has reduced compared to four years ago. Expenses have reduced due to better maintenance and use of modern technology, which has opened the way for new projects and recruitments.

Recruitment process and student convenience

Railways has completed the recruitment process for 18,000 Assistant Loco Pilot posts and the recruitment has started. To resolve the complaints of students during the examinations, Railways has also created a special ‘War Room’, so that the problems related to the examination centers and selection process can be resolved immediately.

Regional projects will increase employment

The railway budget for the North-Eastern states has been increased to Rs 11,486 crore. With this, new lines, stations and projects will be started, which will provide employment to local youth. New railway projects in states like Punjab, Kerala, Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir are also expected to increase job opportunities in the coming time.
