The ‘sickle cell’ disease is a group of hereditary blood disorders, which affects hemoglobin, causing red blood cells to become sickle (sickle) shape and block blood flow, causing serious complications such as stroke, eye problems and infections.

‘Sickle cell anemia’ abolition mission started in 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National ‘Sickle Cell Anemia’ on July 1, 2023 with the aim of eliminating the disease by 2047. The government’s goal is to examine seven crore people up to 40 years of age under this mission.

Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uike announced the establishment of the Birsa Munda Award to develop the medicine for the treatment of the disease during an event organized here on the occasion of ‘World Sickle Cell Day’.

The same medicine is still available to treat the disease

The minister said that only one medicine is available for the treatment of this disease. He said that at present there is no option to choose the appropriate medicine from many options depending on the physical condition of the patient and the severity of the disease.

He said that this problem becomes even more serious in pregnancy or other serious medical conditions, so there is an immediate need to develop a new medicine. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs will organize a competition in collaboration with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi to develop the drug.

Financing up to Rs 10 crore

Uike said that the selected proposal will be funded up to Rs 10 crore. He also said that the Ministry will set up a center for the Tribal Health and Research Institute under AIIMS-Delhi, which will also have external patient and internal patient facilities to provide higher quality medical to tribal people.

The minister said that postgraduate courses in tribal medicine will also be prepared. He said that this would help to remove long-term health inequalities of tribal communities, which are often deprived of geographical, socio-cultural and systemic obstacles.

This particular course will be designed to develop a cadre of physicians with relevant knowledge, clinical skills and public health efficiency to suit tribal environment.
