The central government has banned doses of more than 100 mg of Nimoslide. It is a medicine that reduces pain and fever, but experts say that excessive dosage can cause serious damage to the liver and kidneys. The main reason behind this decision is the potential safety risks of the medicine in patients.
Government and experts’ recommendation
On December 29, the Health Ministry issued a notification regarding this ban. This step was taken on the recommendation of the expert committee of ICMR and CDSCO. The committee warned that high doses can cause serious liver problems, which can sometimes be fatal.
Already banned in veterinary medicine
In January this year, the government had already banned all Nimoslide drugs used in animals. The reason for this was environmental, as this drug was becoming a threat to vultures when used in cows. The study found that giving this medicine to vultures resulted in death within 24 hours.

Nimoslide was introduced in Italy in 1985 and is a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) class of drug. It was not approved in many countries of the world like America, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Long-term use can cause problems like liver toxicity, bleeding, kidney damage and skin rashes.
Situation till now in India
India banned the use of Nimoslide in children in 2011, but allowed its use in older patients. In March 2023, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission had warned that this medicine can also cause fixed drug eruption (rash at the same place repeatedly).
