There is now great hope for the future of thousands of firefighters who toiled for four years to protect the country. The first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agneepath scheme is going to complete their service at the end of this year. In such a situation, the biggest question is what will happen next to these youth after four years of military service. The government had already made it clear that after four years only 25 percent of the Agniveers will get permanent appointment in the army, while the remaining 75 percent of the youth will be released from service.
Now that the time of retirement is approaching, discussions have intensified regarding the employment and future of these youth. Meanwhile, the Central Government, especially the Home Ministry, is working on a concrete and comprehensive adjustment policy. It is believed that under this policy, retiring firefighters will be given a large number of opportunities in the Central Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) and other security agencies. If this scheme is implemented then it can prove to be a big relief package for thousands of youth.
About 46 thousand Agniveer of the first batch will retire.
Agneepath scheme was started in June 2022. Under this, youth were recruited for four years in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The first recruitment process was completed in September 2022, in which more than 60 thousand youth became Agniveer. According to the rules, about 75 percent of these i.e. about 46 thousand Agniveer will complete their four years of service by the end of this year. They will not get facilities like gratuity and pension, although service fund will be given. For this reason, there was concern about his future career for a long time.
Home Ministry started preparations, formed internal committee
According to media reports, the Home Ministry has geared up to provide re-employment to the retiring firefighters. The ministry has directed to form an internal committee of senior CAPF officers. This committee is working on how Agniveer can be accommodated in paramilitary forces like BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. The committee is considering different options so that the military experience of Agniveers can be properly utilized.
50 percent quota in CAPF, relaxation in age and physical can be given
According to sources, under the adjustment policy the government is working on, 50 percent of the direct recruitment seats in CAPF can be reserved for firefighters. Relaxation in upper age limit can be given in recruitment. Some relaxation may be given in physical test. Due to prior military training, the training period can be reduced. This will make it much easier for the Agniveers to make a fresh start again. Along with the Central Government, many state governments have also announced to give priority in jobs to former firefighters. Some states have announced reservation of seats in police, home guards and other departments. It is clear from this that efforts are being made at every level to retain Agniveer in the system. Even before this such signs have emerged. In January, CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan had said that firefighters retiring from the Navy can be deployed in work related to ports and coastal security. This statement confirms that the government is already thinking in this direction.
A big announcement may be made by March-April 2026
It is believed that the internal committee will soon submit its report to the Home Ministry. After this the central government can take a final decision on this. It is expected that this policy will be officially announced before the first batch of Agniveers retire, i.e. by March-April 2026.
