A big controversy has arisen after serving liquor in the presence of Muslim guests at a government dinner in Malaysia. The government led by the Prime Minister of the country Anwar Ibrahim had to resign Tenong King Sing under pressure from the fundamentalists.
About 60 percent of the population of Malaysia is from the Malay-Muslim community. The government is trying to get the support of this community in the upcoming elections. While there is usually no ban on alcohol in Malaysia, there are strict rules regarding it due to being an Islamic country. Earlier, Malaysia had also implemented the law to send those who do not offer prayers to the prayers of Jumme, due to which the pressure of the fundamentalists has increased.
Trying to woo Muslim voters
In the 2022 general election, the Malay-Muslim majority dismissed the multicultural alliance of Anwar Ibrahim and supported the ethnic-nationalist opposition faction. Critics say that Anwar then took several controversial decisions to please the hardcore Islamic voter group, such as removing old temples and promoting the radical nature of Islam in the country.
What is a new controversy
The controversy is related to Tiaong King Sing. He is accused of allowing liquor to serve alcohol in a grand dinner of Global Travel Meet 2025, insulting the Malay-Sancities and Islam. There is a ban on liquor in government programs in Malaysia.
Tiang said that this program was not organized by the private sector, not government and no permission was given by the government. He said, “Tourism was not under the control of Tourism Malaysia in the grand dinner.” Nevertheless, their cleanliness did not succeed in convincing the people. The government’s associate United Malay National Organization (UMNO) also warned against normalizing liquor in government programs.
Strict response of clerics
The UMNO’s Ulema or Maulvi Parishad said that Muslim bureaucrats should avoid drinking alcohol openly in government ceremonies. Mohammad Khairuddin Aman Razali of the council said, “Alcohol is against unhealthy and Islam. The work of the minister can become excuses to normalize liquor among the new generation.”
