Government gave proposal in January
According to Reuters, in January this year, the central government had quietly proposed to companies to preload the Aadhaar app. UIDAI, which manages the Aadhaar program, had asked the IT Ministry to talk to other companies including Apple and Samsung on this proposal. It was said in the proposal that all smartphones sold in India should come with biometric identity app. That is, the government wants that the Aadhaar app should be preloaded in the phone like apps like calendar and clock.
Why does the government want to preload the Aadhaar app?
UIDAI had launched the Aadhaar app in January this year. Many features are available in it including uploading personal details and locking biometric data. The government says that if this app is preloaded then people will not need to download it separately. Let us tell you that Aadhaar is being used on a large scale for access to banking, telecom and airport services.
What do the companies say?
Companies like Apple and Samsung have opposed this proposal of the government and put forward concerns related to safety and privacy. They also say that to pre-install the Aadhaar app, they will have to create a separate production line for mobiles sold in India.
