Government’s big decision: BAN on silver import from Thailand, preparation to give relief to domestic market.

The government has taken an important step in the last few months amidst a record increase in silver prices. Now the import of silver jewelery from Thailand and other ASEAN countries has been banned till 31 March 2026. Under the new policy of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), the import of simple jewelery without fancy stone has been banned. The government’s decision has been taken with the aim of preventing misuse of FTA (Free Trade Agreement) and protecting the domestic industry. A large amount of cheap silver was coming to India from Thailand under the guise of finished jewelery, causing a direct impact on domestic business, artisans and employment. Currently, silver prices in the country have reached ₹ 1.35 lakh per kg and it has seen a rise of 57% in the last one year. This decision will strengthen the domestic demand of silver and can provide relief to domestic artisans.
