According to the OpenDoors International Educational Exchange Report 2025, India has confirmed its place as the country with the largest population of foreign students in America for the second consecutive year.
According to the report, this year the number of Indian students increased by about 10% and reached beyond 3,63,000. This growth proves that America is still the center of excellent education and career opportunities for Indian youth.
Indian students almost doubled in 8 years
This surge is not just of one year, but there has been a continuous increase in the number of Indian students in the last eight years. In 2017-18, where the number of Indian students was 1,96,000. Today it has increased to 3,63,000. That means an increase of about 85% in just eight years. After the Covid pandemic, there was a decline in the number of Chinese students in America, but at the same time, Indian students arrived in America in large numbers, and this void was rapidly filled. With this India further strengthened its position.
America got economic benefit of 14 billion dollars
The impact of Indian students is not limited to education only. The report shows that in the year 2024, Indian students will contribute approximately $14 billion to the American economy. Fees, living expenses, local shopping, travel, and everyday expenses sustain thousands of jobs in America.
First choice of Indian students
About 49% of Indian students studying in America are pursuing graduate (Masters/PhD) degrees. This shows that Indian youth are progressing rapidly in advanced fields like research, technology, engineering and management. Also about 40% students are on OPT (Optional Practical Training).
Under which they get a chance to work in America after studies. This year, a huge increase of 47% was recorded in the number of Indians in OPT. This means that Indian students are not only studying in America but are also easily getting jobs there.
China ranks second after India, but decline continues
The number of Chinese students in America has been decreasing for the last several years. There was a 4% decline in the number of students coming from China in 2024-25, while there was an increase of about 10% in Indian students.
