Have you ever thought about a weapon that can tear apart mountains, destroy bunkers and destroy the enemy without touching it from a distance of 70 kilometers? Now a similar weapon will be made in India also. Yes, we are talking about France’s deadly Hammer missile, which will now be manufactured under ‘Make in India’. The recent deal between India and France has cleared the way for this and this may give Pakistan sleepless nights. Let’s take a look at the full story of this deal and the power of the hammer.
What is the ‘Hammer’ deal between India and France?
First, talking about the deal. During the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India on 17 February 2026, both the countries signed a joint venture. French company Safran and India’s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) decided to make Hammer missile in a 50:50 partnership. This deal was part of the Mumbai meeting of Modi-Macron, where this agreement was also signed along with the big purchase of Rafale jets.
This means that now Hammer’s guidance kit and major components will be made in India, which will strengthen the supply chain for the Indian Air Force. It is estimated that this project will cost thousands of crores and it will also include long range XLR variants.

Now know, what is the power of hammer?
The full name of Hammer is Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range i.e. long range high-tech smart bomb. It is a precision-guided air-to-ground missile, which is launched from the Rafale jet. Its range is up to 70 kilometers and it works in all weather conditions, be it night or day, fog or rain.
The Hammer has GPS, IR and laser guidance, making it adept at multi-target strikes. It comes in variants ranging from 250 kg to 1,000 kg and is specially designed to destroy hilly areas or fortified bunkers. In Operation Sindoor in May 2025, the Indian Air Force used Hammer on terrorist targets in Pakistan and it caused huge damage to Pakistani defense. Experts say that the accuracy of the hammer is so much that it can destroy the enemy without causing much collateral damage.
Why is this deal bad news for Pakistan?
- India’s strike capability on the Pakistan border is already strong and now India will get immediate supply from the local production of Hammer.
- The combo of Hammer with Rafale jets can easily target Pakistani bunkers or terrorist camps on the LoC.
- Hammer had already shocked Pakistan in Operation Sindoor and now this strength will be doubled with 114 new Rafale jets.
- In Pakistani media, this deal is being described as ‘India’s aggressive policy’ and many experts believe that this will increase pressure on Pakistan’s defense strategy.
Overall, this deal is not just a story of arms but of India’s self-reliance. Under Make in India, we will now make our weapons with French technology, which will create jobs and boost defense exports.
