Ethanol in hand sanitizers safe or not: One thing which was most discussed during the time of Corona was hand sanitizer, no matter where you come from, you could not enter the house without washing and sanitizing your hands, today it is being used everywhere in home, office, school, mall and transport, people believe that it protects from diseases by killing bacteria and viruses, but now a question is being raised about whether hand sanitizer can also cause cancer, let us tell you. Let us tell you what is the truth behind this,
First know what is the matter?
The European Union is currently reviewing whether ethanol used in biocidal products, including hand sanitizers, should be classified as a hazard category due to some reports raising questions about its potential impact on cancer and reproductive health, although according to WHO, ethanol is completely safe for hand cleaning and there is no serious health risk even with regular use over a long period of time,
Why is this question arising in EU?
The European Chemicals Agency released an internal report on 10 October, in which ethanol was described as potentially harmful. The report said that this substance can cause cancer and problems during pregnancy. The agency suggests that some other alternative may have to be considered in place of ethanol in cleaning and hygiene products. ECHA’s Biocidal Products Committee will meet between 25 and 27 November, in which it will review the scientific evidence. And if ethanol is considered harmful to humans, the committee can suggest its alternatives,
Expert opinion
Dr. Vishal Patel, senior consultant internal medicine, Amrita Hospital, Gandhinagar, says, “Scientific evidence to date suggests that regular use of ethanol in hand sanitizers does not pose a significant risk; occasional or limited use is unlikely to cause serious harm.” According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, ethanol or Hand sanitizers based on isopropyl alcohol are considered to be the most reliable option for cleaning and protecting hands. If the ethanol content in hand sanitizer is at least 60 percent, then only it can completely eliminate bacteria and viruses. Its strong antimicrobial ability makes it the most suitable to prevent the spread of germs. However, now everyone’s eye is on the EU report. It is resting.
