A very sensitive and serious matter has come to light from Sirsa, Haryana. Warden Sukhdev Singh posted in District Jail Sirsa committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance. Before committing suicide, he left two suicide notes, in which he alleged mental torture regarding duty timings and pressure of public apology and held two officers including the jail DSP responsible for his death. HUDA police post is investigating the matter.
According to family members, Warden Sukhdev Singh was suffering from heart disease for a long time. Two stents were placed in his heart. For this reason, on December 14, he had requested the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Security) not to impose night duty.
It is alleged that the officers got angry at this request and after this they started harassing them continuously. In the suicide note, Sukhdev Singh has written that he was mentally tortured for the last 15 days.
Consumed poison at home, died during treatment
On Thursday evening (January 1), Warden Sukhdev Singh consumed sulfas at his home. When his condition worsened, he was first taken to the Civil Hospital, but in view of his serious condition, he was referred to a private hospital. He died during treatment at night. On receiving the information, jail administration officials also reached the hospital.
Called son before suicide
Before committing suicide, Sukhdev Singh called his son Jaspal Singh. He told that fed up with the harassment by both the officers, he was consuming poisonous substances. He told his son that he had a suicide note written in the name of the Jail Director General and Jail Superintendent in his bag. During the call he said, “I have been defeated by these brutes, take care of yourself and your mother.”
Deceased’s son Jaspal Singh and father Deep Singh told that Sukhdev Singh’s call had come at around 5 pm on Thursday evening. By then he had swallowed sulfas. The son said that his father held DSP and LO responsible for his death. The family reached the spot within an hour.
He told that both the officers were continuously harassing his father. The son alleges that his father was also subjected to caste based abuses, due to which he was completely broken and was forced to take this step.
If action is not taken then we will not take the dead body – family
The family members of the deceased have filed a complaint against two officers including the DSP at HUDA police post. The family alleges that no concrete action has been taken so far. The family members have clearly warned that they will not take the body until action is taken against the accused officials. The family has demanded strict action in this matter.
What was written in the suicide note
Sukhdev Singh has expressed his pain in the suicide note written in the name of Director General of Jail, Haryana Prison Department, Panchkula, DC Sirsa and Superintendent of Police Sirsa. He wrote, “I have been working on the post of warden in District Jail Sirsa for the last 7 years. I am suffering from heart disease for the last 6 years. On December 14, I requested the Deputy Superintendent of Police Security not to impose my night duty, on which he got angry and started telling me that he will keep you under the Kot Meena wall only. He harassed me for 15 consecutive days. On December 31, 2025, again at 6 pm, he told me I apologized in front of the jail superintendent and kept me on duty the whole day. Son, please take care of me and my mother.
In the second note, Sukhdev Singh wrote, “Sir, Jail Superintendent, I came to your residence this morning to wish you a happy new year and apologized in front of all the guards. The entire guard requested you to forgive me, which you accepted. Still, the LO did not take me on duty and was kept standing the whole day. Now in the evening, being disappointed, fed up with these two officers, I am taking a step like suicide. The DSP and the LO harassed me for 15 days. Sir, I apologize to you and please give me justice, Sukhdev.
Police engaged in investigation, officers silent
At present, HUDA police post has started investigation regarding this entire matter and the facts are being investigated on the basis of suicide note. Since the matter is very sensitive, all eyes are on the next action of the administration.
