US Iran Tensions: Tension has increased globally after the joint military operation between Israel and America against Iran. However, Iran is continuously retaliating, due to which this conflict is becoming more serious. Meanwhile, the biggest question arising is – does Iran have nuclear weapons? And if not, does he have the capacity to do so?
Iran’s nuclear programme:
Iran has been working on a nuclear program since the 1980s. Tehran has consistently claimed that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes such as energy production and medicine. According to earlier reports by the US intelligence agency Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Iran halted its organized nuclear weapons program in 2003 and has not formally moved towards weapons manufacturing since then.
Similarly, assessment reports by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) state that Iran is not currently engaged in the active process of producing nuclear weapons, but has developed technological capabilities that could support future weapons production.
Iran has the capability to make nuclear
The issue of enriched uranium: To make nuclear weapons, it is necessary to enrich uranium to about 90%. According to international nuclear monitoring reports, Iran has produced up to 60% enriched uranium, which is below weapons-grade levels but can technically be further enriched.
However, a country’s possession of enriched uranium and its production of an actual testable nuclear device are two different processes.
According to international intelligence assessments available so far, Iran does not possess declared nuclear weapons. It has halted weapons programs in the past and has the technical capability, but active weapons production is not confirmed. Developing nuclear weapons will still require additional enrichment and testing. Therefore, in the current situation, saying that Iran has a nuclear bomb is not considered factually correct.
