Kitchen items with microplastics : The use of plastic in modern kitchen has increased significantly. Many things used in the kitchen are plastic. Almost everything from water bottle to food is being stored in plastic containers. These plastic may not look harmful to see, but gradually poisoning is dissolving in our blood.

Does the kitchen really contain microplastics
Researchers at Columbia University, published in the Journal Prosecution of the National Academy of Sciences, found that 2,40,000 nanoplastic is found in a one liter of water plastic bottle. According to a study of 2024 published in the Science of the Total Environment Journal, microplastic can also start from our kitchen, where the food is made.
Microplastics in these 5 items of kitchen
1. Plastic Container
Plastic containers and water bottles are used a lot in our homes. When hot food or drink is kept in plastic containers, microplastic particles come out of it and reach the body. Therefore, use glass, steel or ceramic container. Avoid keeping hot food in plastic utensils.
2. Old Plastic Utem
Plastic utensils can speed up the arrival of microplastic in the body. In the 2024 study, Lusher and researchers from UK and Norway prepared jelly in older or new plastic utensils. They heated the water, stirred the jelly mixture, assemble it, cooled and cut into pieces. While every sample in the jelly prepared with new plastic utensils was about 9 microplastic particles, there were about 16 in the jelly made of old plastic utensils.
Jelly made of worn plastic utensils contains 78 percent more microplastic than jelly prepared from new utensils. Therefore, stainless steel, iron, ceramic cookware and glass utensils are best. Teflon and old non-stick cookware should also be avoided.
3. Chopping Board
Plastic chopping boards can be a major source of microplastic. Researchers say that when you cut food on plastic cutting boards, especially meat, you can include 196 microplastic particles in your food. This is caused by friction between knife and plastic. To avoid this, start using bamboo or wood cutting boards.

4. Blender with plastic jar
There is friction in using a blender with plastic jars, which can remove a large amount of microplastic. In a study published in the Journal of Hazards materials, researchers found that billions of plastic particles are released in just 30 seconds of blending. This is especially worrying when it makes smoothie or frozen drinks, which has ice or solid food. Therefore, instead of plastic blender, use only a blender with glass jar.
5. Sponge
Clean-clean sponges are also very dangerous. Due to this, the microplastic particle breaks from the sponge and reach your kitchen while washing the utensils. Even if they are washed, these particles go to the environment through water and then reach you back through some means. Therefore, instead of synthetic sponges, sponges made of cellulose or other biodegradable should be used.
