Premature menstruation: According to a new research, healthy foods eaten in childhood prove to be effective in preventing premature periods in girls. A healthy diet includes vegetables, legumes and whole grains. The results published in the magazine called Human Reproduction were not focused on the girls’ body mass index (BMI) or their length.

Is it right to start periods at an early age?

It is well known that those who start periods at an early age increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, breast cancer and heart and blood vessels. Associate Professor Holi Harris at the ‘Fred Hachinson Cancer Center’ in Seattle, USA, said, “I think our findings highlight the importance of breakfast and lunch based on the need for access to healthy food options for all children and teenagers and evidence-based guidelines.” This conclusion has come from possible research, made on more than 7,500 children between the ages of 9 and 14 years.

What should be included in food?

Researchers evaluated girls’ diet based on two installed diet patterns: which were alternative healthy food index (AHEI), and Imperical Dietary Inflammatory Pattern (EDIP). AHEI includes healthy foods such as vegetables, legumes and whole grains. While there is untreated food items such as red and processed meat, trans fats and salt. The first option was considered better for health than the other.

Two dietary patterns connected to periods age

EDIP diet reflects their overall ability to cause inflammation in the body. Foods associated with excessive swelling include red and processed meats, meat obtained from animal organs, sophisticated grains and high energy drinks. Harris said, “We saw that these two dietary patterns were associated with the age of periods, which shows that a healthy diet was associated with the introduction of periods at the right age. The important thing is that these results were not related to the height of BMI and girls. And this reflects the importance of healthy diet regardless of body shape.” Researchers believe that these results suggest that the type of food for girls during childhood and adolescence can affect the time of periods.
