The story of Nisa Unnirajan, a resident of Kerala, proves that if a person has a true desire to learn and progress, then age, circumstances and difficulties can never stop his path. At the age of 40, despite being a mother of two daughters and juggling a job and having hearing problems, Nisa secured 1000th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination in the year 2024.
Nysa was born in Kerala and received her education there also. She was good in studies right from the beginning and always dreamed of doing something big. However, after marriage, children and responsibilities, his life started running like a normal household. With time he also started working. Meanwhile, he started having trouble hearing, which gradually increased. Despite this he did not consider himself weak.
Most people stop preparing for a difficult exam like UPSC after the age of 30, but Nisa decided at the age of 35 that she would prepare for civil services. This decision was not easy, because at that time he had two small daughters. Elder daughter Nandana was 11 years old and younger daughter Thanvi was only 7 years old. Household responsibilities, children’s education, job and health related problems, everything was in front of them. Despite this, Nisa did not give up.
did not lose sight of the target
Nysa’s daily life was very busy. Waking up early in the morning to prepare children for school, handling household chores, then working and studying at night was his daily routine. Many times he felt tired, but he never lost sight of his goal. Her husband Arun, who is a software engineer by profession, stood by her at every step. Apart from this, his retired parents also gave full support in the responsibilities of children and household. Nisa herself believes that if the family had not supported her, this journey would not have been so easy.
This was the biggest problem
Hearing problem was the biggest challenge for Nisa. In an examination like UPSC, interview, class and discussion have great importance. But Nisa made this weakness her strength. He was inspired by Kottayam Sub-Collector Ranjeet, who himself became an IAS despite hearing loss. Nisa thought that if he can do it, I can also do it. This thinking kept him moving forward in every difficult time.
failed so many times
The journey of UPSC was not at all easy for Nisa. He failed in his first six attempts. There are many people who give up only after failing once or twice, but Nisa kept questioning herself every time and correcting her mistakes. He says that he never considered any of his efforts as useless. Every failure taught him something new and made him stronger than before.
After all the hard work paid off
For studies, Nissa took guidance from a coaching center in Thiruvananthapuram, but her real strength was her own study style. She used to study every subject by dividing it into small parts. Making notes, revising again and again and using time properly had become his habit. She used to read stories of UPSC toppers and watch inspirational videos, which kept her morale up.
In the year 2024, Nisa’s hard work finally bore fruit. He passed the UPSC exam in the seventh attempt and secured 1000th rank. For him, this moment was not just about passing an exam, but a victory of years of hard work, patience and faith.
