Hearing has started in the Supreme Court on the matter of conflict between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). ED alleges that the Chief Minister obstructed the ongoing search operation in the office of political consultancy company I-PAC.
Demand for CBI investigation
ED has said in its petition that Mamata Banerjee interfered during the raid in the office of I-PAC and its co-founder Prateek Jain. The agency has demanded a CBI inquiry for independent investigation in this matter. ED alleges that during the search some important documents were taken by the Chief Minister. The agency has also demanded the Supreme Court to return those documents.
Solicitor General said – shocking incident
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said in the court that this is a shocking incident. He said that when a statutory agency was doing its work, the Chief Minister reached there, the Police Commissioner also came with her and later sat on a dharna. This case is being heard by the bench of Justice PK Mishra and Justice Vipul Pancholi of the Supreme Court. The court has started hearing the arguments of all the parties.
Allegation of obstruction in legal action
The Solicitor General said that this incident points towards a dangerous tradition, where people holding constitutional posts interfere in the actions of agencies working under the law. ED says that the Chief Minister’s actions disrupted the legal process.
