Causes Of Recurrent Heart Attack After Stenting: Nowadays, there is so much information available on the internet about heart disease and its treatment that patients and their families often get confused. Especially regarding cardiac stent, this question arises again and again in the minds of people that if a stent has been installed, can a heart attack still occur? Doctors clearly say that even after stent placement, the possibility of heart attack is not completely eliminated.

When is a stent placed?

Stents are placed when cholesterol accumulates in the arteries that supply blood to the heart and narrows the path. It is a metal mesh, which is inserted into the blocked vein to normalize the blood flow. Usually, after a heart attack or in case of severe blockage, a stent is inserted so that the vein remains open and adequate blood reaches the heart.

Although the stent opens that particular vein, it does not protect all the arteries of the heart. Even after stent placement, if the patient adopts an unhealthy lifestyle, eats fried and high-fat food, smokes or stays away from physical activity, then blockage can form in other veins of the heart. This is the reason that despite having a stent, heart attack can happen again.

What do experts say?

Dr. Santosh Kumar, Heart Disease Expert, Fortis Escorts Hospital, New Delhi, explains, “A stent is not a substitute for a natural vein. It is just a temporary support, which helps in saving life at that time. Repeatedly inserting stents in the body is neither considered safe nor is it a permanent solution. If a heart attack happens again, the patient’s condition can become more serious than before and the treatment also becomes difficult.”

What happens after stent placement?

After stent placement, the patient becomes more sensitive than before. The risk of death in case of a heart attack again increases and in many cases, angioplasty or stent insertion may be required again. In some cases, if the body does not accept the stent or there is a problem with the procedure, the situation can even be life-threatening. That is why doctors repeatedly advise that one should not be careless after stent placement. A balanced diet, regular exercise, taking medicines prescribed by the doctor at the right time, avoiding smoking and stress control are the most effective ways to keep the heart safe after stenting. Stent is a part of the treatment, not the complete treatment, the real treatment comes only through improvement in lifestyle.
