Early Signs Of Heart Attack In Women: Recent studies have clearly revealed that the cases of heart attack in women below 40 years of age are increasing rapidly. The main reason for this is the constant stressful lifestyle, lack of sleep and those early signs which women often ignore, such as constant fatigue, shortness of breath or feeling heaviness while walking. Many times women mistake these symptoms for normal stress, weakness or diet-related problems, due to which treatment gets delayed.

Dr. Naveen Bhamri, Vice Chairman and HOD, Cardiology, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, in his article written in TOI, said that now heart attacks are no longer limited to elderly people only. According to doctors, in the last few years, cases of both heart blockage and attack have increased rapidly among young women. Long working hours, irregular daily routine, less sleep and taking body signals lightly are the major reasons for this trend. The most difficult thing is that young women often do not even think that what they are feeling could have any connection with the heart.

Which signals do women ignore?

  • Excessive fatigue for no apparent reason
  • shortness of breath while walking or climbing stairs
  • Pressure or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, or upper abdomen
  • nausea, dizziness, or sudden sweating
  • chest pressure or tightness, even if not very severe

These symptoms often appear like gas, anxiety or general weakness, so women do not take them seriously.

Why can’t women under 40 understand the signs?

Stress, work pressure and lifestyle: Most women think that all the problems are due to long working hours, lack of sleep or mental stress. The second biggest reason is that they have this misconception that “How can I have heart problems at my age?” This thinking makes them delay in going to the hospital. The third reason is hormonal problems and anemia. PCOS, thyroid, and low hemoglobin are common in young women, which can put extra strain on the heart. Talking about the fourth reason, it includes not getting health checkup done. What happens is that many women consider being active as fitness and do not get regular checkups done. Smoking and wrong fitness methods are also included in this. Cigarettes, crash diets and over-training also increase the risk for heart disease.

Why is this trend raising concerns?

In India, there has been an increase of about 30 percent in the cases of heart attack among the youth. Young women often dismiss their symptoms as stress or gas, due to which treatment is delayed.

What should women do?

Never ignore signs like shortness of breath, unusual fatigue or pressure in the chest, upper body, get health checkups done from time to time, keep stress, sleep and lifestyle balanced and if any symptoms appear, immediately consult a doctor.
