Why Indians Get Heart Attacks Early: Heart diseases are increasingly becoming a serious concern in India. In the last few years, there has been a sharp increase in the cases of heart attack and the surprising thing is that now this problem is affecting even younger people as compared to western countries. A major reason for this is believed to be increased bad cholesterol, i.e. LDL, in the blood.

Cardiologists say that heart related problems in Indians can start only at low cholesterol levels. That is, the cholesterol level which is considered medium in western countries can prove to be dangerous in India.

What do experts say?

According to experts, the genetic makeup of Indians is also an important reason behind this. Body structure, the way it processes fat and sugar, and certain inherited traits make Indians more susceptible to heart disease at an early age. This means that this problem is not limited to food habits only, but genes also play a big role in it. Due to these genetic reasons, blockage in the arteries of many Indians and heart related diseases develop about 10 years earlier than the people of western countries.

Lifestyle is also responsible

However, genetics alone cannot be held responsible for bad cholesterol. Lifestyle also increases this risk. In today’s fast paced life, junk food, sweet snacks and high fat food have become common. Along with this, lack of physical activity, increasing stress and weight gain also harm heart health. All these reasons not only increase LDL i.e. bad cholesterol, but also reduce HDL i.e. good cholesterol. Whereas the job of HDL is to help in clearing the fat deposited in the arteries. When bad cholesterol increases and good cholesterol decreases, the risk of heart attack increases manifold.

symptoms are not visible

The biggest problem with cholesterol is that its symptoms often do not appear. Most people do not realize that they have high cholesterol until they experience problems like chest pain, shortness of breath or a heart attack. This is why regular health check-ups are very important, especially for people who are above 30 years of age or who have a family history of heart disease.

You can protect yourself from these things

Small changes in daily habits can play a big role in keeping the heart healthy. Eat a balanced and heart-friendly diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Do some physical activity every day, even if it’s a 30-minute walk. Stay away from processed foods and sweet beverages, keep your weight under control and try to manage stress. Over time, these habits help in reducing bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease to a great extent.
