The risk of Hepatitis A is increasing alarmingly in Kerala. This disease has engulfed almost the entire Kerala. By the end of the year 2025, more than 31,536 cases have been reported and about 82 people have died due to this disease. This is considered to be the most dangerous and frightening figure till date, which has raised questions on the health system of Kerala. According to some reports, the main reason for the increasing cases of Hepatitis A is the severe lack of sanitation and hygiene arrangements. Apart from this, groundwater i.e. the water inside the ground has been completely contaminated, which is considered to be a major reason for the spread of this disease. Some shocking facts have also emerged in the reports. Earlier, diseases like hepatitis were mostly seen in children, but in recent cases, young people and teenage children are also falling prey to this disease, which has become a matter of serious concern. This disease directly affects the liver.
What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a viral infection, which directly affects the liver. When hepatitis A virus (HAV) enters the body, it causes inflammation in the liver.
The symptoms of this disease are often mild and can be cured with normal medical treatment. However, this disease is highly contagious and can spread rapidly from one person to another, which makes it dangerous.
How does the virus spread?
Hepatitis A virus is mainly found in the stool and blood of an infected person. This disease can spread in many ways. This virus can spread to another person by eating food prepared by an infected person, drinking dirty or contaminated water, or by being very close to an infected person and coming in contact with him.
Symptoms of Hepatitis A
When this virus infects the body, the body’s immune system starts fighting against it. Many types of symptoms can be seen during this period. These include diarrhea, fatigue, pain in joints and bones, stomach related problems, loss of appetite, frequent fever, itching all over the body and rough skin. This disease directly affects the liver.
Hepatitis A vaccination and WHO guidelines
Hepatitis A vaccination is not the same for every country. The World Health Organization (WHO) decides this on the basis of the country’s sanitary conditions and the risk of disease spread. In low-income countries, there is less need for large-scale vaccination because children there do not often show symptoms of the disease and they naturally get lifelong immunity. In such countries, almost every child comes in contact with this infection. Whereas in high income i.e. developed countries, very few children become victims of this infection. In developing countries like India, where sanitation is improving, children do not come in contact with this virus in childhood. Because of this, they do not develop the natural immunity that children in poor countries develop.
