For the period of Mahabharata, you must have heard that Draupadi married five brothers and she used to tell time with all five brothers. Have you ever thought that if today someone says that this still happens, will anyone believe it? But let us tell you that there is a place in India where all the brothers of the family marry the same girl. In fact, a different kind of tradition is still in discussion in some areas of the Himalayan region of the country. In such a situation, let us tell you today at which place all the brothers of the family marry the same girl.
Where is this unique tradition performed?
In fact, some time ago, two real brothers had married the same girl in the Trans Giri area of Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. This marriage organized in this area lasted for several days with traditional customs, a large number of villagers participated in this marriage. It was told that the marriage was done with mutual consent between the bride and groom. This community is related to the Hatti tribe, which was given the status of Scheduled Tribe 3 years ago. At the local level, this type of marriage is known as Jodidar or Jajda.
Why is this unique tradition followed?
Let us tell you that apart from Sirmaur, such marriages were also seen earlier in Jaunsar Bawar of Uttarakhand and Kinnaur region of Himachal. After the 70s and 80s, such cases became very less, but recently some examples have come to light again. According to the information, such marriages have become prevalent in the hilly areas with the aim of preventing the distribution of limited agricultural land and ancestral property. It is believed that this keeps the family united and the land does not get divided. Apart from this, security and management of agricultural operations in remote areas are also considered a reason. All the family members were responsible for the children. However, traditionally the eldest brother is considered the legal father of the children.
Legal status and social acceptance
Polyandry is not generally recognized in Indian law. However, in some areas of Himachal Pradesh, the Jodidar system is mentioned in the revenue records. According to the village elders, such marriages take place with the consent of the society, but their number is very less and such cases are rarely reported openly.
