Indian all-rounder Axar Patel has hit hard on a common misconception regarding captaincy. As the captain of Delhi Capitals, he often gets to hear that the captain should know how to speak English, only then he can handle the team. Akshar Patel believes that captaincy in cricket has nothing to do with language. Rather, real leadership is determined by the player’s understanding, his relationship with the team and his decision-making ability.
“Captaincy is not achieved by speaking English” – Akshar
While talking to The Indian Express, Akshar Patel said that people often raise questions about his language. He said, “People start saying that he doesn’t speak English, how will he captain the team? But the captain’s job is not just to speak. His job is to identify his players, their strengths, weaknesses and how to get the best out of them.”
Akshar clearly said that it is a wrong thinking to consider only a good English speaker as deserving of captaincy. He further said, “If we say that the captain should have personality, should speak English, then this mentality is of the people’s own making. There should be no language barrier in captaincy.”
He believes that a team leader is one who can motivate his team and take right decisions on the spot. No matter what language the captain is speaking.
