Kidney Health In Men: Nowadays many men pay special attention to their strength and fitness. Going to the gym, building muscles and taking care of heart health are their priorities. But in this race, kidney health, a very important part of health, often gets ignored. An early and very silent sign of kidney related problems is the presence of protein in the urine, which is medically called proteinuria.

There are no obvious symptoms of proteinuria in the initial stages, but it can be a sign of internal damage to the kidneys. If it is not taken care of in time, it can take the form of serious diseases in future. According to Dr. Manish Jain, Senior Director of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant at Medanta, Gurugram, men are often unable to recognize this hidden sign. He has told about it.

How do kidneys work?

Kidney is the filter system of our body. It filters dirt and excess fluid from the blood and removes it through urine. Along with this, it also plays an important role in controlling blood pressure, maintaining the balance of electrolytes in the body and producing red blood cells. Special filters (glomeruli) present in healthy kidneys ensure that large particles such as proteins do not pass into the urine.

What is proteinuria and why is it dangerous?

When these filters of the kidneys start deteriorating, protein starts coming out through urine. If this condition persists for a long time, ignoring it can be dangerous. No problem is felt in the beginning, hence it is also called silent kidney disease. But as the damage progresses, problems like swelling in feet and ankles, fatigue, foamy urine and frequent urination at night start appearing.

Why do men face more problems?

Men are more likely to develop high blood pressure at an early age, which is a major cause of kidney failure. Apart from this, the risk of type-2 diabetes is also seen more in men, which causes damage to the kidneys over time. The problem of prostate enlargement with increasing age can also create obstruction in the path of urine, which puts pressure on the kidneys. Besides, lifestyle habits like smoking, drinking excessive alcohol, excessive consumption of processed food and red meat also prove to be harmful for the kidneys. Ignoring the symptoms delays diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

How to identify proteinuria?

No complicated test is required for its identification. A simple urine test can also detect protein in urine. If protein is found in the report, the doctor evaluates the condition of the kidneys through further tests such as spot urine protein-creatinine ratio, 24-hour urine test, and blood tests.

Easy ways to keep kidneys healthy

The most important thing for kidney health is to keep blood pressure and blood sugar under control. If there is any problem related to these, then take medicine, proper diet and regular exercise as per doctor’s advice. Keep your weight under control, because obesity increases the risk of both high BP and diabetes. Reduce processed foods, excess red meat and sugary beverages and include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and light proteins in your daily diet. Along with this, keep getting health checkups done.
