Why High Cholesterol Is Increasing In Young People: In view of the increasing risk of heart diseases, experts have now clearly said that controlling cholesterol should be started from an early age. According to the new guideline, people should start trying to reduce their LDL i.e. bad cholesterol from the age of 30 and it is important to keep it under control throughout life. The American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and nine other institutions have jointly issued these guidelines. Its objective is to reduce deaths due to heart diseases, which are still a major cause of total deaths. Experts say that up to 80 percent of heart diseases can be avoided by timely prevention.

What does the new guideline say?

According to the new guidelines, cholesterol testing should start from childhood itself. It is advised to get tested for the first time at the age of about 10 years, so that those people who have high cholesterol due to genetic reasons can be identified. In such cases, it is important to start treatment immediately. After this, re-examination at the age of 18-20 years and regular screening at least every five years is advised. People who have problems like diabetes or high LDL may need to get tested more often.

What should be the bad cholesterol?

The goal of treatment depends on the individual’s risk. Generally everyone should try to keep their LDL below 100. People who are at high risk of heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years will have to bring it below 70. At the same time, for people who have already suffered a heart attack or stroke, it has been advised to keep this level less than 55. According to the report of The New York Times, experts believe that the longer the level of LDL remains high in the body, the greater the risk of heart disease. Therefore, emphasis has been laid on adopting the principle of the less, the better and the longer, the less, the safer.

How can we improve?

The first step to reduce cholesterol is lifestyle improvement. This includes balanced diet and regular exercise. However, if needed, medicines like statins and other modern medicines can also be given. The guideline also says that it is not right to rely on supplements, because in most of the cases their effect has not been proven. Besides this, testing of LDL alone is not enough, but testing of a special protein called Lp(a) is also said to be necessary, which can increase the risk of heart disease.
