Vikram samvat 2083: In the English calendar, the new year starts from January, but in the Hindu tradition the time is calculated according to Vikram Samvat. Every year starts with Shukla Pratipada of Chaitra month. The coming Vikram Samvat 2083 is going to be very special in many ways. Due to addition of more months, Jyeshtha month will last for approximately 58–59 days.
This is why there will be 13 months in the calendar this year, which is a rare astronomical and calendrical phenomenon. Astrologer Dr. Anish Vyas, Director of Pal Balaji Astrology Institute, Jaipur, Jodhpur, told that in the year 2026, the new year of Hindu calendar, Navsamvatsar 2083, will be of 13 months this time. The reason is that Adhikamaas (Malamaas) will come in this new year. Due to this one month will increase.
Jyeshtha month will be Adhikamas. This Jyeshtha Adhikamaas will last from 17th May to 15th June. The fasts and festivals of the subsequent months will be delayed by 15 to 20 days. Vikram Samvat will start from 19th March, Gudi Padwa and Vasanti Navratri begin from this day.

It is believed that the sadhana done during this period brings good fortune, peace and spiritual upliftment in life.
According to the calendar, Adhikamas will start from 17th May 2026 and end on 15th June 2026. This entire month is considered a blessing. This will be a very holy time of penance, chanting, meditation, devotion and charity. It is believed that fasting on the first day of Adhik Maas leads to the destruction of sins and positive energy enters life.
It is considered to be a time in the calendar when worldly and auspicious activities are put to rest and spiritual practice is given priority. This month comes once every three years and its purpose is to balance the mathematical adjustments of the calendar, but religiously it is considered extremely sacred.

Prophet and horoscope analyst Dr. Anish Vyas said that due to the extra month of Jyeshtha in Vikram Samvat 2083, this year will not be of 12 but 13 months. Adhik Maas i.e. this year the month of Jyeshtha will not be of 30 but of 60 days. The Adhik month of Jyeshtha will be from 17th May to 15th June 2026.
Adhik Maas is also called Purushottam Maas. Its special importance has been mentioned in religious texts. In this month, there is a ban on auspicious activities like marriage, housewarming etc.
Why does it feel like Malamas?
Prophet and horoscope analyst Dr. Anish Vyas said that the difference between the solar and lunar calendars gives birth to this wonderful month. The solar year is 365 days and the lunar year is 354 days.
This difference increases so much every 32 months and 16 days that an extra month has to be added to balance the calendar. This additional month is called Adhikamas, Malamas or Purushottam month.
Abstaining from auspicious activities
Prophet and horoscope analyst Dr. Anish Vyas said that traditions say that auspicious rites like marriage, house warming, mundan, naming, bhoomi pujan or starting any new business should not be done during Malmas.
It is believed that auspicious works done during this period do not give the expected results and the planets and constellations are also not considered favorable for auspicious deeds. For this reason, it is advisable to postpone major rituals during this entire period.
Why is more mass necessary?
Prophet and horoscope analyst Dr. Anish Vyas said that in Hindu religion almost all the fasts and festivals are observed keeping in mind the dates of the moon. The Moon revolves around the Earth in about 29 days, which is called a lunar month. When the Moon makes 12 revolutions around the Earth, it is called a lunar year which is approximately 355 days.
Whereas the solar year is of 365 years. If there is no arrangement for more months, then Hindu fasts and festivals will be pushed back by 10 days every year, due to which Diwali will be celebrated in rainy season and Holi will be celebrated in winter season.
