Sajib Vajd, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has alleged that the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has promoted fundamentalism in the country, which has made religious harassed reactivated. He said that this year Hindu minority communities are celebrating their Durga Puja amidst fear and insecurity. He said, ‘Durga Puja is the time of devotion and celebration, this festival is a symbol of victory over the evil of good, but this year, our Hindu brothers and sisters are celebrating worship in Bangladesh in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. The rise of fundamentalists under the Yunus government is bringing back the old shadow of religious oppression.
The former advisor also said that during this period, the temples were attacked, families were threatened and the right to worship independently is once again in danger. Vajed said that the same fundamentalist, who once opposed the independence of Bangladesh, has become more adventurous and is spreading terror among those who maintain the spirit of freedom struggle of 1971.
He said that Awami League has always been a party protecting the minorities of Bangladesh. The party renovated the destroyed temples in 1971, empowered Hindus, Buddhists and Christians to worship according to their faith and implemented strict measures to prevent communal violence.
Vajed said, ‘Secularism and equality have been the basic principle of our politics, because Bangladesh was born from the point of view of unity, not by partition. Today, when our Hindu siblings worship the mother Durga and light a lamp, we cannot ignore the atmosphere of this fear. But we also know that this darkness is not permanent. Sajib Vajed assured that Awami League would once again return to power and every Hindu, every minority will be able to celebrate their religion without fear and will live with full dignity and freedom in this country.
