A heated political debate has erupted inside and outside the Parliament regarding the Vikas Bharat Ji Ram Ji Bill in Delhi. The opposition is opposing this bill calling it an insult to Mahatma Gandhi, while BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has raised questions on this allegation.
This controversy is related to the bill introduced in the Lok Sabha, which is going to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act i.e. MNREGA. The Central Government is presenting this bill as a major change in the rural employment system.
How can this insult Mahatma Gandhi – Kangana Ranaut
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut rejected the opposition’s objections on the Vikas Bharat Ji Ram Ji Bill and said that it is beyond comprehension how Mahatma Gandhi is being insulted in this. He said that Mahatma Gandhi himself believed in Shri Ram and he had united the entire country by singing hymns like Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram. According to Kangana’s statement given to ANI, this mission is being associated with the name of Ram while carrying forward the dreams of Gandhiji.
What is VB-G RAM G Bill and how will it be different from MNREGA?
The Central Government is going to present ‘Viksit Bharat – Guarantee For Rozgar And Ajeevika Mission (Gramin)’ i.e. VB-G RAM G Bill in the Lok Sabha, which will replace the MNREGA Act. This new law will work on a supply-based plan instead of a demand-based structure. Under the new system, the budget limit for employment will be fixed in advance, which will be determined by the Central Government on the basis of some fixed but still unclear parameters. Employment will be given only in those rural areas which will be notified by the Central Government. This is considered to be a major change in the nature and rights based system of rural employment scheme.
Protest in Parliament, opposition’s allegations and government’s stance
On December 16, during the winter session of Parliament, opposition parties also demonstrated strongly against this bill. Many leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, described the VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025 as weakening MNREGA.
The opposition alleges that this law will limit the employment rights of the poor. While presenting this bill in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan called it a step towards making the livelihood of rural India more effective and targeted. The government says that this mission will strengthen the goal of developed India.
