Every year in India, a large number of students appear for NEET exam to get admission in MBBS. There are some students who want to go abroad and become doctors. There are many reasons for doing so, such as better salary, good work-life balance and different experiences. Despite this, Canada is not among those countries where admission is given directly on NEET score. Nevertheless, earning a doctor’s degree in Canada is considered very beneficial.

To become a doctor in Canada, one has to take MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree. While it takes about five years to complete MBBS in India, MD in Canada takes three to four years. Apart from this, doctors there also get attractive salary packages and their work pressure is also less as compared to India.

Bachelor’s degree is mandatory to become a doctor in Canada

Medical admission in Canada is not available directly after 12th. Indian students must first obtain a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. It usually happens in science subjects like Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Maths. The duration of this graduation study is four years. Only after completing Bachelors, students become eligible for MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) exam.

It is necessary to pass MCAT exam

MCAT exam is the main basis for admission to Canadian medical colleges. In this, students are asked questions from Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Apart from this, questions related to writing skills and verbal reasoning are also included. The better the MCAT score, the greater are the chances of getting admission in medical college.

Application process in medical college

After good scores in MCAT, students can apply to Canadian medical colleges. IELTS or TOEFL scores, Bachelor’s scores, and MCAT scores are required when applying. After admission in medical college, students study MD for four years. The first two years focus on theory and the remaining two years on clinical practice.

pass licensing exam

After completion of four-year MD degree, students have to pass the licensing exam. It is known as Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). This exam is more difficult than MCAT. Only after passing this can students practice as doctors in Canada.

Becoming a Part of a Residency Program

Many students apply to residency programs through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) after completing their MD degree. To join the residency, one must be a permanent resident or Canadian citizen. It usually takes three to seven years to complete residency. During this period, doctors do clinical practice and gain experience.

After completing residency, one has to pass MCCQE Part I and MCCQE Part II exams. Only after successful completion of these exams, students get a license to practice from the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC). With this, they can work independently as doctors in Canada.
