In today’s digital era, the lifestyle of children is changing rapidly. In the digital age, children use smartphones during breaks from homework, before sleeping, for online classes, gaming and streaming. Due to which the screen time of children is increasing rapidly, but now a new study has warned that excessive screen time can affect not only the eyes or brain but also the heart health. According to the study, every extra hour spent on the screen in free time, whether it is scrolling social media, watching web series or playing games, increases the risk of heart related diseases in children. In such a situation, let us now tell you how excessive screen time is increasing the risk of heart health in children and what has come out in the study?
What does the study say?
According to research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, every extra hour of screen time in children and adolescents can increase their cardio metabolic risk, i.e. the risk related to heart and metabolism. More than 1000 children and youth were included in this research. Research has found that the risk increases with every extra hour of screen time in children aged 6 to 10 years. This effect has been seen more in teenagers. Apart from this, excessive screen time has also been found to be directly related to lack of sleep.

Big connection related to sleep
The study has also revealed that this risk increases more in children who get less sleep. Watching screens till late night affects sleep, which affects the body’s metabolism. According to research, 12 percent of the relationship between screen time and hard disk is created through lack of sleep. That means, if children sleep better then the risk can be reduced to some extent. According to experts, sitting in front of the screen for a long time reduces the physical activity of children. Due to this, the risk of weight gain, blood pressure and sugar levels can be affected and fat and cholesterol in the body can increase. All these factors can later lead to heart diseases.
Why is concern increasing in India?
In India too, screen time among children has increased rapidly, especially after online studies and use of smartphones. In such a situation, this study is being considered very important for Indian families also. Because here too, impact on children’s sleep and activity has been seen. However, experts say that this risk can be reduced by making small changes in the lifestyle of children. Parents can make changes by doing things like limiting daily screen time, staying away from screens before sleeping, encouraging children for sports and physical activities, and making certain times and places in the house no-screen.
