Bangladesh T20 World Cup Controversy Explained: The 2026 T20 World Cup will be played from 7 February to 8 March, hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Before that, the entire month of January was surrounded by controversies, because Bangladesh had refused to send its team to India due to security reasons. 1. Kolkata Knight Riders bought Mustafizur Rahman in the auction for Rs 9.20 crore. But amidst the increasing political tension between India and Bangladesh, on January 3, 2026, on the instructions of BCCI, KKR released Mustafizur Rahman.

2. A few days later, the Bangladesh Cricket Board officially told the ICC that due to security reasons it does not want to send its cricket team to India.

3. Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a letter to ICC that the World Cup matches of Bangladesh team should be shifted out of India (Sri Lanka).

4. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said that the Indian Board was not given any information about the discussions between BCB and ICC regarding changing the venue.

5. ICC reviewed security arrangements in India. Security assessment was conducted and assurances also received from Indian authorities. In the end he ruled that there is no threat to the safety of Bangladeshi players, fans and media workers in India.

6. After reviewing the security arrangements, ICC rejected the demand of shifting Bangladesh team’s matches to Sri Lanka.

7. ICC, while giving the reason for rejecting Bangladesh’s demand, said that changing the venue just before the start of the tournament would jeopardize the integrity and planning of a world-class tournament.

8. ICC gave 24 hours ultimatum to Bangladesh whether it is allowed to play in India or not. If even after this the BCB remains firm on its decision, then its place will be given to Scotland (on the basis of ranking).

9. Pakistan Cricket Board also openly supported Bangladesh regarding the venue change issue. When the ICC board meeting took place, the only country to support Bangladesh was Pakistan. In the board meeting, other directors had no objection to organizing the World Cup in India.

10. On January 22, the Bangladesh government decided that the Bangladesh cricket team will boycott the 2026 T20 World Cup. It was also said that ICC has not done justice to him.
